How do I tell if it’s a register vent or return vent?

Vents or register vents blow air into the rooms and return vents are sucking air in. Register vents are usually smaller than return vents.

If you are still not sure what is a register vent and what is a return, you can make a simple test.

Turn on your furnace fan and take a single piece of paper. Put paper in front of the vent.

If the paper is pulled towards the vent it is a return vent.

If the paper is blown away from the vent it is a register vent.
